"This is the only way we, as architects and forest scientists, will be able to improve the population's lives," said Maria Chiara Pastore, architect and urban planner, at a plenary session entitled "Forests for People" on Wednesday, October 2, at the 25th World Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), which runs until October 5 in Curitiba, Brazil.

According to Pastore, urban population growth is directly and indirectly related to deforestation.

"Whether it is for food production or climate change. Only 3% of the surface of Europe is occupied by cities, which consume 70% of the energy generated. Cities are the cause of climate change and threaten life in the forests. On the other hand, the urban centers are at risk from the effects of climate change.

Pastore proposes increasing the number of trees in cities by creating parks and green corridors and buildings in order to reduce heat islands.

"There is space to increase the tree canopy and have true urban forests," she said.

Pastore is a professor and researcher at the Polytechnic University of Milan and an author of the book Re-interpreting the Relationship Between Water and Urban Planning: The Case of Dar es Salaam; she has worked as a consultant on urban forestation in various cities including Tirano (Albania) and Milan (Italy).

"By the time the Winter Olympics take place in 2026, Milan should have 200,000 new trees," she said.

The session "Forests for People" was moderated by IUFRO vice-president Björn Hannel and included a lecture by anthropologist Purabi Bose.

The 25th World Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) is being held in Curitiba, Brazil, and organized by Embrapa, the Brazilian Forest Service, and IUFRO.
